Abstract
Background: Obestain is a recently identified hormone that is encoded by ghrelin gene. The mean serum obestatin level, fasting level, and 2 hour after glucose loading level were measured in normal weight and obese subjects. Associations of serum obestatin levels with metabolic parameters were investigated.

Methods: The association between obestatin level with anthropometric and metabolic parameters were examined in 13 obese and 12 normal weight subjects.

Results: No sex differences were found in fasting, 2 hour after glucose loading and mean serum obestatin level. Fasting and mean serum obestatin levels were lower in the obese group compared to the normal weight controls. However, no apparent changes were observed in 2 hour after glucose loading obestatin levels. Fasting serum obestatin levels were negatively correlated with BMI, waist circumference, fasting insulin levels, fasting c-peptide levels and HOMA-IR, and positively correlated with total cholesterol levels. However, only BMI was an independent predictor of fasting serum obestatin levels after adjusting for age, sex and correlated factors.

Conclusion: Circulating obestatin is increased in normal weight and decreased in obese subjects. Our results suggest that obestatin may play a potential role in body weight regulation.
